NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have independent neurologists work with teams’ medical staff on concussion issues. The policy will be implemented as soon as details can be worked out. Goodell also urges players to tell medical staffs possible head injuries to their teammates.
Goodell and union director DeMaurice Smith also testified before Congress at hearings on football head injuries. He promised to Congress that the league will make better effort in taking care of players who had head injuries or sequelae of head injuries. That might be one of the causes for his recently urging players in NFL jerseys to tell their teams’ medical staffs if they think a teammate shows symptoms of a concussion.
Another cause should be a survey conducted by the Associated Press this month. 160 NFL players were surveyed and 30 replied that they have hidden or played down the effects of a concussion. Being told of the findings, the league began to emphasize the importance of players reporting head injuries, no matter how minor they believe they might be.

NFL wants expansion in Britain
The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday he expects the league to play more regular-season games in Britain in the next few years and even to put a franchise in London.
Goodell said that “every indicator” shows the British market can support more games and that having a franchise here is of “tremendous interest” to the league. But the commissioner does not have a timeline for expanding the NFL’s overseas presence.
This year is the third year in a row the NFL is staging a regular-season game in London and the New England Patriots will play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium in London this Sunday. Goodell said at a sports conference Friday that the league is looking into playing at least two games a year in Britain and hoping to find potential venues in Manchester, Glasgow and Scotland.
According to Goodell, the league in considering expanding the regular season to 17 or 18 games and having every team play one game abroad. However, the commissioner said the league is not considering staging a Super Bowl abroad.

NFL commissioner Goodell said Cowboys’ video board not to be a problem
After the league altered it playing rules and the video boards were lifted to 90 feet, 5 feet higher than NFL guidelines, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that the video boards in the new Cowboys Stadium will be no significant problem anymore.
After Titans punter A.J. Trapasso hit the video board at the $1.3 billion facility in Arlington, Texas, on Aug. 21, a lot of people became concerned about punters hitting the video screens. The league issued last Friday the new rule, which calls for an immediate whistle and a replay of the down, with no time taken off the clock. It also ruled that the replay official can ask for a TV review to determine if a ball hit the video boards, regardless of the time in the game.
The rule was made in recognition that there is a need for a rule to deal with anything that strikes an object and tell game officials how to handle them. And Goodell said that research did not support that a punter could be able hit a screen board hang above 85 feet.
